The story of part one of Morgana continues in the Spring of 1278, when she is taken out of Wales to the great castle of Belcarte on the whim of its chatelaine, Edith de Barfleur, the Dowager Countess of Belcarte. Morgana learns she is to be the ward of Lady Edith, and she believes this is great good fortune, for it means she is saved from the Nunnery of St. Wydda. It is to Lady Edith` grandson that her half-sister Constanca is married and now, six months after the marriage, she rejoices in the knowledge that she will see her again.
When she arrives at Belcarte she finds it a place of great beauty and wonderment but is plagued by an uneasiness that she cannot understand or explain. When she meets her guardian Lady Edith she instinctively recognises the the lady the driving force behind Belcarte`s power and wealth, but she also sees that things are not as they should be there.
Constanca is expecting a child, but is full of discontent and rancour. Her husband, Stephen de Barfleur, Count of Belcarte ignores her whilst he amuses himself with his mistress, Pirelle d`Anvers. Nevertheless, Morgana resolves to raise her sister`s spirits and strives to make good use of the gifts she has been given. She makes new and trusted friends at Lady Edith`s court – and one dangerous enemy.
Disconcertingly her path once more that of d`Raconville, and their ambivalence to each other accelerates into something she cannot control. When the constant feeling of foreboding that has dogged her erupts into a terrible tragedy that strikes at the heart of Belcarte, she finds herself in great peril.
