The local vicar invites Miss Tayke, Cedric and Bunty to a bonfire event to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day. After the judging of the annual pumpkin competition the winner Mrs Bumble drops dead in the tea tent from a suspected heart attack. The post-mortem however reveals that she was in fact poisoned. Bunty advises the police of something suspicious he witnessed before the murder and acting on this information Inspector Maltby discovers a quantity of potassium cyanide on one of the guests and makes an arrest. Miss Tayke also saw something else of a much more sinister nature in the tea tent and sets about unmasking the real killer.
