Hugo Lopez’s exploits in Cuba were those of any energetic teenager in and out of scrapes. He attended Catholic schools, fished for croakers and red snappers, and entered rowing contests at the local yacht club, where he wasn’t allowed membership because his family wasn’t wealthy.

  It was with the sacrifices made by his parents that Hugo was able to leave Cuba and attend college in the United States, though their money soon ran out, leaving Hugo to work two, and sometimes three, jobs to pay for his education. In the incredible American life that flourished from that first step, Hugo was drafted into the Army and started a family, and his professional successes led to requests from the Defense Communications Agency and NASA. Hugo has often suffered racial indignities of the small-minded, but he has also found goodness in the many who helped him on his way.
