When Laura’s husband died she had to take control of his business and shoulder the burden of suddenly being a single parent. Ten years later, when her business is successful and her children are independent adults, she realizes just how lonely she is. She’s had to be in iron clad control for so long all she want’s now is an intimate friend who she can relax that control around, or even give it up completely. But she has no idea where to find such a friend. A normal bar seems counter productive. The only thing she can imagine happening to an older woman past her prime is half drunk men hitting on her at best or completely ignoring her at worst. That’s when she decides to go to a lesbian bar, surely lesbians are more respectful. She isn’t quite sure what to expect, but when she walks inside she realizes she made a mistake, and runs into Sarah on her way out.

Sarah always thought she was the perfect housewife, living to make her husband happy and never refusing him anything. Then he left her. It wasn’t even for another woman, she was just too boring. When she looks in the mirror she doesn’t see a good wife, she see’s a doormat. Now she’s on a mission to turn herself into a new person. She wants to take charge, be in control, call all the shots, but know’s she doesn’t have the confidence to be a dominate personality to a man. That’s what makes a lesbian bar seem like the perfect solution. When she walks inside she’s practically trampled by Laura. It’s not love at first site, or even lust at first sight, but they see in each other what they’re missing in their own lives.

Just as their fragile relationship develops into something stronger than either ever expected, outside forces strive to pull them apart. Laura think’s she needs to keep her reputation as a strait woman for the sake of her employees. If people lack confidence in her and her business suffers for it, people will lose their jobs. And then there’s her children. If they found out she’s gay, what will happen to her family? Will she lose her straight-laced, ultra conservative daughter forever? What will her son think? As Laura struggles with these concerns, Sarah encounters problems of her own. She begins to see things in Laura that remind her of her ex-husband. Then, out of the blue, her ex-husband walks back into her life, further confusing her. Now both women must decide who they belong with.
