Moving Sally Redruth into her apartment, the one she shared with Heath, as they work side by side at the Jaq Bennett Agency, but as time passes, Jaq becomes more curious as to what happened to the friends she made, Sally convinces Jaq to return and when she does, she discovers that Nearworld now has a police force and an Army, all directed and controlled by Vernine, the man who used to be her secretary and whose name was then Clive. He works with Halsurt and Jovian of the Bowmen of the Forest and Elain of the Finders. It is at this time that Jaq also discovers that Nearworld is trembling, with may tremors, neither she nor the citizens knowing that Golath, the Gold of Evil, is calling up his destructive magical beings; the Monsters of the Deep; the Swampfolk; the Southram Dragons and other evil entities because he now wants all life in Nearworld to be extinguished. After meeting a fruit and vegetable trader named Meliak, she accompanies him to see for herself the dangers she will face. A war begins in Nearworld during which many attempts are made on Jaq's life and during which greatly destructive entities rise and kill. Although Jaq has no military training whatsoever, the citizens look to her to defend them and to defeat their enemies, friends follow her almost to their own death as Jaq fights back, using The Staff to tap into amazing magic and to punish and kill in her own way. It is only when she realises that she has limited time in Nearworld that she decides there is only one path down which she must go, she must kill herself if she wants to win.
