The narrator is joined by three friends on a houseboat in their belief that collectively they have a good novel in them, a position not shared by the narrator's wife, Ethelbertha. This group of chaps are entirely believable and likeable.
Their efforts to get on with the task are diverted by endless stories, tall tales and reflections on life. There is a great deal about dreams, soldiers as unsuitable heroes, the selfishness of cats, and almost anything else that a group of chaps might have an opinion about. Some anecdotes are very funny – the astute observation on doll’s houses, for example.
