Early into the academic year at a boarding school outside of Boston, Department Chair Peter Burnham makes a simple misstep on-line that looks to render him jobless and homeless. Amidst differing teaching priorities and perpetual discipline issues, an alum working at the White House returns to campus with unexpected consequences and a terrorist threat involving an international student emerges while issues of race and class simmer. Some actual and venerable independent schools appear here, and for solace Peter heads for a family home on Nantucket where things come to a head on a glorious spring afternoon.
