An operating system, or OS, is essential to the computer. It is the most important program that the computer needs.

It is likened to the human brain wherein if we had no brain, we are useless. Or if our brain is diseased we become ineffective and unproductive. We cannot do any physical, mental or emotional function at all. Similarly with the computer, without the operating system, the computer is of no use.

An operating system is a software program that allows the computer hardware to work together with the computer software. They manage every function of the computer. As an overview, a few of these functions are:

1.       They distribute memory precisely.
2.       They operate printers and scanners.
3.       They organize and store files.
4.       They read and transfer data.
5.       They control security.

Generally, operating systems are programmed to make sure that everything is running smoothly with the computer so that we can use it without problems and tweak it to fit our needs.

There are many types of operating systems. Each type can allow for single-usability or multi-usability, single-tasking or multi-tasking. To keep up with the digital advancement, operating systems also constantly develop along with new changes in technology. Which operating system is best depends on which one you need in order to get the computer in working condition for you.
