Five short stories about individuals’ very different experiences of physical and psychological pain: the immense silence and emptiness in the wake of losing a loved one; the pain of divorce, when everything seems to fall apart; pain as a result of illness, when one’s body becomes one’s worst enemy; and the agony experienced by Anna, a war reporter. In each case, a phase of healing follows – but in Anna’s story it is the land around her that heals.
The author was awarded second prize in the UNESCO 1995 Short Story Competition by The International PEN Association in the UK. The stories were also read on various BBC channels.
