Chicago-transplant Bennie Daniels wakes up on her bathroom floor after her best friend’s bachelorette party and painfully remembers hearing that her high school boyfriend Ben Hospers is engaged. This joins the list of disappointments in Bennie’s life. Having dropped out of college after her father’s sudden death five years ago, 24-year-old Bennie has struggled with depression and has developed a coping mechanism of painting. She also relies on the support of friends and family, especially from roommate Fletcher Pierson.
Though their relationship is platonic, she feels threatened when he begins dating Linda Thropp. However, Bennie is slightly distracted when she runs into Chad Dawson, best friend to Ben. Against Fletcher’s warnings and her own reservations, she pursues a romantic relationship with him in order to prove that she is capable of moving forward.
Unfortunately, there are more harsh realities to deal with: best friend Tina Matthews’ wedding is fast-approaching when she confides that she may be pregnant; Fletcher continues to see Linda even though she hates Bennie; and Skyler Simms, her gorgeous gay co-worker at the thrift shop Junk Box, is juggling two equally-gorgeous men.
Bennie continues to cover up her issues and true feelings while trying to masquerade as a healthy, well-adjusted adult. However, she has many revelations and more growing up to do before she can put her paint brushes down for good.
