After the death of Ruby’s husband, Wesley, she suddenly finds herself wanting a real career after having spent all her adult life devoted to family and a restaurant her husband named after her. Ruby suddenly decides to become a movie star, but there’s a slight problem; she’s 55 years old, an age where most actresses have been put out to pasture.
Ruby doesn’t look her age and can easily pass for 35, so she decides to do just that, and it’s “Hollywood, here I come!” Her almost thirty son, Kenny, thinks the charade is ludicrous and tries to discourage Ruby until he realizes that she's about to make his dream come true by letting him take full charge of the family restaurant while she pursues her dream of becoming a star.
Ruby gains the support of her two best friends, Effie and Dorothy. Dorothy is the only one left with a husband, and spends her time helping less fortunate people in the community and taking care of her husband, Dwight, who was best friends with Wesley before he died. Effie, on the other hand has been single all her life and a bit jaded from past relationships. Nevertheless, she enjoys the life she has created teaching acting classes and a few singing gigs every now and then.
Ruby enrolls in the “Hey I Saw You on TV” workshop and faces quite a dilemma after her first acting class. Coach Ike, considered to be a legend by his students, even though it’s been rumored he’s an alcoholic and raving lunatic, gives the kiss of death to “older” people trying to make it in the movie business while mistaking Ruby for being thirty-something.
Meanwhile, Kenny is in his glory, having transformed Ruby’s former office at the restaurant into a "Macho Man Cave." Kenny also hiresTina, the new cook who will be cooking vegetarian dishes instead of the delicious meat and potatoes cuisine Ruby’s Restaurant has become known for, and plans a “Grand Opening” with his best friend, Winston, who will be displaying his talents as a keyboard player and rapper.
Ruby throws a wrench into their plans when she lets them know she’s made a mistake about her acting career and will be resuming her rightful place at the restaurant. Kenny and Winston panic and go into high gear in an effort to change Ruby’s mind by surprising Ruby with “the perfect man” for her, hoping she’ll realize her place is at home with a man by her side.
Kenny and Winston’s plan backfires when Ruby changes her mind about Coach Ike and gives acting another chance, and all is well– until Winston falls for Tina, the verbally challenged cook Kenny has just hired.
