Phaon, Lowenhard and Gruffydd have been mercenary companions for over twenty cycles on the small world of Malidri, which is in the stage of development where many battles take place over small matters and where weapons are swords, axes, and bows. Each cycle Malidri enters a cycle called frysa that forces the people to go underground for shelter and protection from the cold, snow and ice. The three friends must plan for this time that is getting close. They need a place to stay and must gather enough food or gems to pay their way into a safe haven. While traveling, Lowenhard and Phaon each have a dream with the same female in it. In Phaon's dream she is someone he should know. In Lowenhard's, she kills his friend Phaon. Although neither tells the other of the dream, both are bothered by it until they reach Livery and meet her face to face.
