Muriel Antwater is a witch, no ordinary witch. She is the guardian for the gateway to Hopplescotch Realm. She lives a quiet, orderly life in Beechhorn Cove. She teaches the local children at the schoolhouse during the week, life has been quiet for the last ten years since Agnes Fairwether, another powerful witch was banished. Agnes had sought power and wanted to rule in this world and the Realms.  A battle had taken place with Muriel being the winner. There are seven Realms in our story, Hopplescotch, Bungleburb, Zimbler, Rumpleton, Hogglenoggle and Griggle. The seventh Realm is only referred to as the seventh Realm, it is pure evil, and no one goes there except Agnes and the Whozells, whom she created.
Our story starts with a letter to Muriel saying that Abby, (a Hopplescotch) who is the key to the gate, is being sent to her for safekeeping. Agnes is back and wants to overthrow the Realms. Mozac, a moon rat comes to Muriel’s aid. Mozac is suspicious about the motive for Abby’s arrival. Why send the key to the gate? They set a distraction for Captain Wynard, Muriel’s neighbour, who has been snooping around in case he gets in the way when Abby arrives. The Captain reveals that he is Alfred, Warlock of Cobbersham (Abby’s usual keeper) when he confronts Mozac. Alfred has mind jumped into the Captain, he warns Mozac that all may not be, as it seems in the cove. As Muriel has never meet Abby, Alfred has sent her twin in her place as a decoy. She cannot open the gate.
Abby attends school she makes friends with Peter, Amber, Henry and Jinx. Muriel is showing signs of personality changes, a glimpse of someone else perhaps. The children explore the caverns below the cliffs and discover two men delivering an object in Lantern Cavern....
