Ann Carter is very attractive, and a very competitive golfer. She is unhappily married. She wants to win the club championship. She tries to elicit the help of an older, misogynistic, Zen oriented caddy. His name is Jack "Three Iron" Shaw, a former golf pro. Ann tries every trick in the book: bribery, seduction and begging. They have confrontation after confrontation, until she agrees to do it his way.They have problems, but she does win the club championship.

Mutual respect develops, they fall in love, and eventually are outed. She is forbidden to see him. Jack is eventually fired from the course. He enters the qualifying round of the US Open at his home course prodded by his fellow caddies. On the last hole all he needs is a par. Lying two in a high lipped sand-trap he hits the ball five feet from the pin. However he breaks his club. at the base. He pool ques it in and is disqualified.

His notoriety playing par golf with just a three iron lands him a job as head pro in Brisbane Australia. When he leaves Ann finds out the truth about Jack "Three Iron" Shaw and it isn't pretty.
