William Ralston Shedden-Ralston was an English writer and linguist, mostly known as an expert on Russian life and literature.
“Princess Helena The Fair” is a legend, entered in “Russian Fairy Tales, A Choice Collection of Muscovite Folk-lore”. The story tells about one old man, who has three sons. The two elder brothers are fine and stout fellows. But the youngest one, Ivan, he is like a half-grown lad or a half-fledged duckling. Short before the death the old man says to sons to come and read prayers over his grave. But after father’s decease the older brothers prefer to propose to king’s daughter and ignore the father’s order…
In keeping with the best traditions of Russian folklore, the tale determines the human flaws, punishes the lazy, cruel, and rewards the honest. Enjoy the reading.
