In Qeltar, danger is constant from creatures who kill at will and harsh elements the seasons can bring.  Dragons dominate the Mountains and serpents rule the west coast.  Dirjon and Teja Krest are a couple struggling to protect themselves and their children by settling in the peaceful valley of Rush territory.  There, they have escaped the paths of dragons and other vicious animals until now.

When Shakraz, a wild dragon, enters Rush territory she kills one of Dirjon’s friends and attacks two of his children, almost burning them alive.  Worried about their lives and those of their children, Dirjon and the neighboring men plan a hunt to kill Shakraz.  They are met with an objection by a seer, Matesse, who warns them about the natural order of things and the retribution that killing a sacred beast could bring.  Ignoring her warning, the men kill the dragon.  As the dragon dies, a new and more lethal creature is born, one that is bloodthirsty and poisonous.

As the new creature grows in size, it becomes stronger and more powerful.  It appears to be indestructible.  In the face of surmounting danger, Dirjon is forced to make decisions that may leave his family unprotected so that he can find a solution to destroying the creature before it reproduces.

In the meantime, a Kadom Dragon, the largest and fiercest of dragons, also emerges on the horizon.  Can this new creature be destroyed before it overtakes the territory, and can the Kadom dragon also be driven away or killed before it takes too many lives.
