Rada is the daughter of the maid and the cook for a Russian aristocratic family. She benefits in many ways from her relationship with the daughter of her parents’ employer, but her envy and anger grow as she learns more about the life she is excluded from because of her social standing.

The revolution that follows the First World War forces the wealthy family into exile, and they escape to France, taking along Rada and her parents. But Rada continues to witness life from the outside. From a hill behind their house, Rada can see the Eiffel Tower and the lights of Paris, far off in the distance.

Rada decides to create a new narrative of her past, borrowed and appropriated from the life she learned from watching others. She plays the new role well. But will this new life bring happiness or nightmares?
