The unthinkable has finally come to pass. The abuse of the environment has finally become too great and mother nature is fighting back with an epic drought. There hasn't been any significant rainfall anywhere in the world in over two years. Ground water has been polluted to the point where it is undrinkable, something people find out quickly and fatally when they succumb to their thirst. The government has stepped in, rationing the limited water supply they have been able to purify. It is enough to keep the survivors from dying but not much more. This is Brendon Corbin's world.

Eleven year old Brendon and his mother Celeste must try to survive in this harsh new world. Civilization has been parsed down to the bare essentials: water and food. For the time being, the government is providing both. Brendon and Celeste travel with a wheelchair bound man named Harold. Together, the three live an existence that revolves completely around the government allocated rations. In his travels around the city, Brendon has found several animals which he has made it his mission to save, but the cost is high. Every ounce of water, every bite of food that he gives to them is one less for him.

A new friend, Carl, joins their small group but shortly thereafter the government announces that they will no longer provide rations. It is a death sentence for the survivors and panic ensues. Brendon's small group has no choice but to leave the city and hope that they will find water elsewhere. Their plan seems to have promise until Carl begins acting strangely. Then, in a most fantastic turn of events, the animals start speaking to Brendon. It will now be up to him to head off the evil that the animals are foretelling.
