“A Separate Peace” by John Knowles is a coming-of-age novel. The novel is based on a short story titled “Phineas” written by Knowles earlier in his life.

Although it was the author’s first published novel, it eventually became his best known work. The novel is set against the backdrop of the Second World War.

The story extensively explores some of the most important themes such as patriotism, morality, and loss of innocence. Gene is the narrator of the story.

The novel is basically an autobiographical work that draws on the author’s experience at Exeter to create the Devon school.

Like the narrator and the protagonist of the novel, Gene, the author had also attended a summer session at school to make up some classes.
