Red Dragons in Europe tells the story of Welsh participation in European football competition. The story features the big and the small in Welsh football, from the giants of the Football League to minnows like Borough United. It is a tale of gallantry rather than glory. Of the 162 matches that Welsh clubs contested in Europe up to 1998, only 37 were won. But memories are more precious than victories. In the late 1960s and early 70s, Cardiff City were a consistent force in Europe, reaching the semi-final of the Cup-Winners' Cup in 1967-68. Swansea City have known the ecstasy of a 12-0 European win and the pain of an 0-8 defeat. Wrexham beat mighty Porto, and in 1981 Newport County were on the threshold of a semi-final. More recently, the spotlight turned on lesser-known names in Welsh football, and they too have acquitted themselves honourably. Little Llansantffraid drew with the Poles of Ruch Chorzow, and Barry Town scared the life out of Aberdeen. In all, 16 Welsh clubs embarked on their European adventure. This book tells their story.
