The original manuscript of the Relación de Michoacán is preserved in the Library of El Escorial, it is believed that the author was a Franciscan friar and expert on indigenous traditions. As shown in the manuscript, the author considers an interpreter of the numerous references contained herein, and all indications are that the dominant language is Purepecha. In our time researchers attribute the authorship of the text to Fray Jerónimo de Alcalá, although there are still some doubts; it is believed that Jerónimo was born in Vizcaya, about 1508 and died about 1545. It is unclear who came to New Spain in 1530 and it is possible that after learning the Purepecha language he would receive the order of Viceroy Mendoza for drafting the work. Relación de Michoacán is one of the most complete texts on the origin and traditions of the Purépecha people.
