Remembrance Day is the tragic story of loss and love between Evna and the two men who adored her, Les and Joe, It begins with their birth, all of them born in 1917 and follows them throughout their lives, from schooldays to jobs and through the Second World War. Les, the Welsh drunk who idolizes Evna from an early age, who stands outside her home proclaiming his undying love for her even though her severe patriarchal father hates him; Joe, the Staffordshire boy, the most beautiful man in the world according to Evna, the kindest, sweetest man who she meets while in service as a young girl, who she adores from the very first time she sees him; and Evna, forced into servitude by her mother to earn money for her terribly poor Welsh family.
Their love is interrupted by the Second World War, where Les shows his rebellious idiotic side until he his given a choice of fight or die; Joe the patriot who signs up on day one of the conflict and serves as a loyal soldier, Evna left behind to worry and pine for absent love, her son born during the loneliness and destruction of the War.
And post war, sad intertwined lives and memories pray on them all.
Told from the memories of Les, an inhabitant of a Care Home in his nineties, he brings all their lives and all the tragic memories alive for the reader.
A touching, tragic story of three people attempting to find happiness and love in a world turned upside down by the ravages of war.
