For generations, the Byrne family has farmed cattle in the lush midlands of eastern South Africa. Then the arbiters of fate conspire to challenge them with the Rule of Three. The family head, Duncan Byrne, is blackmailed and contemplates suicide. That is the bad event. His son, Jack, meets an intriguing woman who has a curious effect on an aggressive leopard. Duncan's adopted son, Adam, starts a private investigator business. That even is neither good nor bad but it does lead to the exposure of the malevolent blackmailer and the involvement of the entire family in a web of intrigue in which Adam becomes a target for reprisal. During the ensuing drama, a debt is paid and the woman makes use of powers that she has always tried to deny. While a romantic liaison simmers, the blackmailer plans revenge. The drama finally explodes with scenes in which a leopard takes decisive action.
