Life hasn't been easy for mankind since The Downfall. National governments collapsed, the environment was wrecked, hostile mutagenic animals sprung up everywhere, and lots of gangs of bandits formed. It's a world where life is cheap and ammo is expensive. The survivors of humanity have done what they can to protect themselves, whether it's by barricading themselves behind large walls, or planting huge automated guns to fend off the robots. This is what most people do; live isolated lives of semi-comfort. I'm not like most people, though. I only learned one trade throughout my life, one not recommended by most folk. I make a living by venturing out of the (relatively) safe zones of the towns and governments that popped up. I enter places others dare not enter. I brave dangers sane people would rightfully avoid. I take on mutants and marauders that will happily kill anyone without a second's worth of deliberation. My name's Rex Strand. I'm a scavenger, the best and worst profession there is in this crazy world of ours.
