Life in Rolbos, the small village tucked away in the Kalahari, is anything but dull. Here the locals spend most of their time in Boggel’s Place, where they hatch impossible plans, remember their many catastrophes and steadfastly refuse to learn from past mistakes. Their most holy pastor likes to join the group at the bar while Gertruida (who knows everything) tries her best to keep Servaas (head elder and postmaster) from guiding them all to salvation. Here you’ll also find Vetfaan with his memories of the Border War and the sexy but lonely Precilla, longing to be loved. Boggel, the hunchbacked barman, often prefers the company of the town’s dog – who also has a tale or two to tell.
Despite all their efforts, the townsfolk simply cannot settle down to a quiet, uncomplicated life. They contemplate the First Chinese Boer War, get involved in a sheep throwing competition and offer the freedom of the town to Nelson Mandela on his 90th birthday.
So, come on in. Boggel is waiting for you behind the counter. Sit down and join the townsfolk while they manage to avoid normality with resolute determination.
