Mr. Johansson is a crook, he himself prefers the title "businessman". When his "business" turns too hot to handle, he flees up north to New England's shore, where no-one knows him and no-one will look for him. When he arrives at a small nest, called "San Diablo", he decides to stay, until the situation has cooled off and he might return to New York.

The small town is strange. As Johansson walkes the picturesque autumn-colored streets, every shop and every business seems to be closed down for years. The only human beeing he meets in person, is a tottery old man. Johansson resides in an old-fahioned pension, but he never meets the landlady. He health dwindels and he can't do anything about it. One day, he finds the door to the sheriff's office open and in a locker an unused sheriff's uniform...
