When young Allison McCormack's best friend goes missing, she turns to Saoirse Morwick, a strange woman rumoured to be a witch, for help. The mystery surrounding the girl's disappearance is more dangerous than either of them expected.

Children have gone missing from the small fishing village of for months and all of them have been attributed to tragic but accidental drownings, until Gilly Campbell, Alison's best friend, joins the ranks of missing children. Alison suspects something terrible has happened and begs her unusual new friend, the widow Saoirse Morwick, for help.

A stranger to the Scottish islands, Saoirse appeared with the dashing Dougal some years before, surprising his friends and family as his unexpected bride. Not quite able to adapt to the peculiar ways of her new life, she remained for the most part secluded at their seaside cottage. Now a widow, Saoirse is even more isolated from the island inhabitants, leading gossiping tongues to speculate that she's a witch. The truth is far more fantastical, however, and she longs for a home she can't possibly return to.

Together, Saoirse and Allison race to uncover the source of the mystery surrounding the missing children, and learn if their friendship is strong enough to withstand the capricious laws of the Fae Folk of Orkney.
