Strategies to Help You Save Money

Since it is human nature not to save, it is understandable how the ability of people with low self-control to save as much as they should is affected. Sendhil Mullainathan, a Harvard Economics professor, has a different view on this matter. He believes it’s not just a matter of self-control. He emphasized how scarcity of attention keeps people from saving. Mullainathan asked what people do during times when they have a heavy cash flow, like after getting a tax refund. Do they put that in their savings account rather than spend it to buy something nice? In reality, many people do the exact opposite. We tend to buy what we want first then think of saving later on. If you really want to save, you can think of future priorities like saving for education or retirement than spending that cash to buy something nice today.

The 52-Week Money Challenge
This money challenge is done by starting with $1 on the first week. It becomes $2 on the second, $3 on the third and so on until it reached 52 weeks. You’ll only need a jar and a chart stating the week, dates, amount, and available balance you already have. For example, if you start from the beginning of the year then the 2nd week will be from January 8 to January 14. You will have to put $2 on your jar on that week so the available balance will become $3 as you already saved a dollar on the previous week.

Basically, 52 weeks equals one year so many people see this challenge as an answer to start the year off right (Statistic Brain ranked “Spend Less, Save More as the 3rd most common New Year’s Resolution in 2014). Though, it doesn’t mean you can only start from January 1 to make your saving journey successful. What’s more important is you’re consistent in putting the required amount of money on your jar each week. You don’t have to worry about the computations because you can download a free copy of the template on the Internet. Life as You Live it, a blog owned by Kaylie who also takes this challenge, has the link to the template. With consistency, you can save as much as $1,378 in a year. If you want to come up with a modified table, all you have to do is pick a base amount and put the augmented amount weekly to yield a decent amount of cash by the end of the year.
