This book contains three alternate outcomes to events in a larger story. Each follows Klara Antarius, one of few survivors of a massacre and eventual founder of the mercenary team known as Dark-Ice, through a cyberpunk world gripped by a secret war being fought by corporations.

The first story is called "Initiation." Klara’s first job with the Mercenary’s Guild would have been easy. Get in, steal a hard drive, and get out. During the job, she finds her stolen heirloom mounted on the wall. That was the first thing to go wrong.

The second is called "Prometheus." Klara is slowly building her reputation within the guild under her call sign; Shade. Her skill as an infiltrator earns her a spot on a team assigned to an extremely lucrative contract, acquiring a prototype weapon. The same prototype used in the massacre that she survived.

The third is called "Shadowblade" and begins to draw on some fantasy elements. Klara has recovered the titular dagger, which is her family heirloom. As part of being taken off suspension for breaching a contract, she meets with an archaeologist who is convinced that the Shadowblade is much more than just a dagger.
