Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the first american writers who obtained world-wide recognition. Hawthorne wrote short-stories, stories for children and novels. The central character of this short story is William Phips, the first governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. As a man of poor origin he was not well educated but became famous after his treasure-hunt campaigns. Eventually, due to the the influence of his family he was granted the position of the governor. It was his initiative to eastablish a court associated with the Salem Witch Trials, the court that later he himself disbanded.
