Slojo is Richard Anderson, a singer/songwriter suddenly emerging from a modern American tradition of median existence. Many years of struggle with life and love have instilled a complex, conflicted sensibility in Slojo that is at once engaged and detached. Driven and casual. Appreciative and disappointed. Not particularly involved with the destination, he finds himself in for the ride of his life.

And along for this ride, though ever mindful of the exit row, is Darla Talbott. Her relationship with Slojo, begun on a Boston playground, has reached a point where each is aware that a corner must be turned—the incompatibility of the demands of her career and his itinerant schedule is forcing the issue of commitment. Each is certain of their love for the other, but their path together darkens on a side of Darla she cannot reveal. Though Slojo can sense this mysterious dimension, his accidental approach to life has left him inexperienced at unraveling such things.

Damon Sutter, his sociopathy born of neglect and nourished by the bourgeoning American subculture of hatred, is on a mission. Relentlessly, Damon forges a murderous trail across America, eluding everyone from the Brookings, South Dakota police to the FBI, Secret Service, and even the Mafia, but always just one step ahead of FBI-deputized Lieutenant Wilson, Tacoma PD, who has a mission of his own.

Ultimately, at a stop along the presidential campaign of Mary Stein, American dream and American nightmare unite to form a new reality for each.
