Time is running out.  Two evolutions in the game have passed with the third and fourth coming faster than any had anticipated.  The world of the knife-bearers and the clans is steadily falling apart with each evolution they lose.

Daniel Bergen is good at keeping up appearances.  He's kept his clan at the top for years, yet now it and he are crumbling.  The facade he's kept in place is slipping and the harder he tries to keep everything under control, the quicker it all slips away.  His clan, his new marriage, even his own life.  In one emotional moment, Daniel's path veers and the consequences could take everything from him.

All Charlotte Prentiss wanted was a life with Jason Decker, but as the final seer, happiness isn't in her cards.  She knows it, struggling to reconcile the certainty of her end with her own wishes.  When her role is revealed, she gladly passes her knowledge onto the keeper, who may be the last chance those she love have of surviving the final evolution when it comes.

The remaining clan, the knife-bearers, and Charlotte's guardian unite in a desperate plan to save Charlotte and Daniel both.  The plan might not work.  It's risky and dangerous and there might not be anyone left to save if Sloan and his demon hordes catch them.
