Near death, Russell Stonechild recuperates in a Scottish hospital and becomes recipient of a new antibiotic, penicillin.  He recovers sufficiently in a debriefing process where he describes his insertion into a German military complex and his retrieval of a German encrypting machine .  The Earl of  Gall, making use of female cryptographers and linguists not accpted in the all-male military machine, evaluates the machine and passes it on to Bletchley Park, home to Alan Turing.

Russell returns to his battalion, the Gall Light Armoured, to continue his activites as battalion scout during the final months of the Phoney War.  With his battalion camped near the French-English border he receives the first impact of Hitler’s blitzkrieg.  Russell gets his first taste of full-out shooting war in which to apply the skills of marksman, scout, linguist and intelligence agent.  A Polish cryptanalyst and an Enigma Machine give his life a strange twist.
