In a previous novel Russell Stonechild saves the Earl of Gall's son from Nazi saboteurs.  He receives an invitatiion to the earl's manor and attends a formal banquest in the company of several interesting guests.  These include Joseph Kennedy, US ambassador to England, and Alan Turing, a university mathematics instructor believed to be involved in cryptoanalysis.

On September 3rd, 1939 Hitler’s murderous campaigns, internal excesses, cheating and lying culminate in an unprovoked attack on neighbouring Poland.  This proves too much for even the complacent Prime Minister, Chamberlain and French President, Deladier.   They declare war on Germany.  Russell Stonechild and the Gall Light Armoured form the first contingent of British Empire soldiers arriving on French soil.

In the unlikely company of Fletcher McAlpin, the Gall chaplain and conscientious objector, Russell helps uncover evidence of a secret Nazi plot to ambush France, just as it had Poland.

Russell crosses the border into Germany to gather intelligence, to sabotage and to steal.  He retrieves a mysterious box and accompanying papers.  With the box safely back in England he learns the box carries the secret name, Enigma Machine.
