The Access Health Plan: The "We Can Story"
The Access Health Plan was developed to meet a need in our local community. There were those in Muskegon County working for small businesses who were uninsured. Small businesses identified they needed health coverage to compete and keep employees. The mission was to offer affordable health coverage for those working uninsured that were not eligible for existing safety net government health plans.
We identified these objectives:
●Keep it affordable
●Access to comprehensive quality health care
●First day health care without deductibles
●Participant to have resources and self-management tools to
improve their health
●Cover “well care” as well as “sick care”
●Include eligibility for part-time workers
Throughout the fifteen years of Access Health, we provided quality, comprehensive, cost-effective health care. There were challenges to be sure, but we were fond of saying “Challenge is opportunity” and “Opportunity brings about change”.
This is a plan that can be duplicated by other communities. We can keep it affordable. We can get small employers to invest in worker health. We can empower people to invest in and improve their health and quality of life.
