Raising a puppy is a big responsibility. My children were small at the time, but eager to learn how to take care of a puppy. We searched for many weeks to find just the right dog. From the moment we met Gretchen, we all knew without a doubt that she was the dog for us. Our family raised Gretchen from the day we brought her home as a puppy of eight weeks.
We all thought Gretchen was smarter than most puppies because she chose us to be her family. This book, told from Gretchen’s point of view, starts with her early memories of her life with her mother, brothers and sisters. One-day people started to visit her family and when they left, she noticed that her brothers and sisters were disappearing! She soon learned that they had gone to a new home of their own and that someday, so would she. This frightened Gretchen, but then one day, she met our family and decided we were just the perfect family for her.
Gretchen’s first days with our family were full of surprises and new experiences. Some of them were scary for such a little puppy. With the love and guidance of our family, Gretchen learned to sleep in her own bed and walk on a leash. She met some unusual pets during her first trip to the doctor and rode an elevator for the first time as she visited City Hall to get her license.
