Hickory Dock had quite recently lived in a cottage on the outskirts of a town he never knew the name of. He hadn't even known the cottage was called a cottage. To him, it had simply been the world. You see, he was a mouse—the Eighth Great grandson of the original Hickory D. Dock—but he’d never been allowed to hear that tale, for in it lay the secret his uncle Trickery Trickery Dock had been keeping for years.

The truth was Hickory was not an orphan. His parents were alive. At least his mother was. His father was still a question, but Hickory was in fact the son of The Dock, and that was something of great importance. Moreover he was an Eighth Great, and that meant he could open doors, but not just any doors—doors through clocks. So, that’s what he was going to do.
