King Arthur is dead, and leaves an army and a country in turmoil. What will happen to his family, to his friends and, most of all, to the dream of a country united against the pagan invaders? This novel follows the separate and distinct narratives of ten people who struggle in the aftermath of the Battle of Camlann. As those who knew Arthur come to terms with their loss, the power struggle begins.

With the army now under the control of King Arthur's most senior surviving high commander, attempts are made to guide the country back onto a peaceful footing. The rule of law and respect for custom still provide the framework for the Brythonic civilisation but there is danger from within. As an over-ambitious king wants to challenge for the supremacy once enjoyed by King Arthur, will this end in the disaster that all fear? The story is told from the viewpoints of ten individuals whose own lives are all affected by King Arthur's death in a significant way.

The novel is the second of the trilogy 'The Shadow of Avalon', which chronicles the time of King Arthur and the generation following him.
