The 35 chapters that make up, “The Amazing Adventures of Sullivan Green” are a fun read for any age but particularly makes a wonderful chapter a night story for children aged 6 years and up. Sullivan the frog and his two best friends Willy and Squeaky are three fun-loving, twelve-year-old boys leading typical young lives in their little home pond in the forest. They love playing games and seeking out little adventures around the pond. Everything changes one terrible night when a vicious storm destroys large pieces of the pond ruining many of the feeding areas. The community elders decide that in order to avoid mass starvation the community must be split. Sadly Sullivan is separated from his friends after his family is one of many others chosen to find a new place to live. After a long journey to a new home, Sullivan accidentally falls into a spin dizzy; a whirlpool that carries him away. Instead of drowning, he is transported back to his first home where he is happily reunited with his best friends. He soon misses his parents so the three boys go on an all out search around the pond to find another spin dizzy in which Sullivan might return home. After days of searching they find one but it does not transport him home. Instead the three of them start on a whirling adventure that takes them to the amazing underground colony of the friendly Mole and Groundhog Peoples. While they await an opportunity to speak with the colony map keeper who can show them the way home, they attend the harvest festival. A frightening night raid takes place by soldiers led by the evil Prince Hugh Derdy the rat. They capture many young people and take them away to the rat colony to serve as slaves. Two of the boy’s new friends are among them. Rather than run for home, the boys decide to join a dangerous rescue mission. They must travel through abandoned, long forgotten solah mine tunnels. In the process they happen upon a young rat named Leroy who is a defector from the Ratzo Guard soldiers. He guides them to the rat colony but warns them that if they are caught they may very well be thrown into the fiery pits. He tells them that the only way to free the slaves is to speak with good King Chawlie who has been totally unaware of his son’s evil ways due to the fact that he tends to his wife, Queen Lizzy, who has had the sleeping sickness for a very long time. A plan is hatched to distract the guards at the castle while Willy and Sullivan sneak inside. The boys are nearly captured before King Chawlie is awakened by a ruckus outside his chambers. He saves the boys but has a great deal of difficulty believing their accusations about his son. He intends to prove his son’s innocence by taking them to the cave of the fiery pits. They arrive just in time to save a groundhog from being forced to walk the plank high above a fiery pit. The king now believes. Willy and Sullivan notice that Squeaky, who was captured earlier, is nowhere to be seen. He was the first to walk the plank. A moan is heard coming from somewhere down in the fiery pit. Squeaky is terribly burned on one side of his body. He is taken to lie in a jelly pond where he is miraculously healed. The king then brings Queen Lizzy to be cured of her sleeping sickness. King Chawlie orders the slaves freed. Afterward a wonderful celebration he declares punishment for the Prince and his soldiers. He sentences them to two years to serve as slaves to the Mole and Groundhog People. Sullivan, Willy, and Squeaky return to the colony as heroes. The boys receive instructions from the map keeper on how to get back home. After all of their exciting adventures will the boys be content to stay home? Only time will tell.
