Cappadocia is under attack from marauding soldiers during the Byzantine Empire. This short story follows a mother, a group of kids, a priest and a soldier as they react to the attack.

The story was inspired by a trip to the region of Cappadocia (Turkey) with its history and unusual geology. There the author enjoyed seeing the churches in Göreme, the Derinkuyu Underground City, and the Eski Gumusler Monastery, and created this historically based story. All of the areas mentioned in the story exist in the same general area of Cappadocia, though they are not as close together as they appear in the story.

Catherine loves studying history, but believes there is truly nothing like seeing it to make it come alive. Before her last trip overseas she had spent a decent amount of time in Europe, but had never been to Asia.

A trip to Turkey to visit family took her to the region of Cappadocia, where she was in awe over everything she was seeing and learning. By the time they left the area, the idea of a short story set there was rumbling around in her mind.
