1692, Salem, Massachusetts: People are being accused, even and hanged on falsified and flimsy evidence of practicing witchcraft. A sense of panic throughout New England ensues. A preacher hears rumours that even he has been named in the witch trials. Believing it is just a matter of time before the local Magistrate has him arrested, the priest quickly organises a wagon train to take anyone wishing to join him in search of a new life in the mid west. Excited at the thought of peaceful life, a small group of settlers accept the offer. They travel thousands of miles and the journey takes months. They finally reach their promised land: a secluded valley with lakes and rivers and it is here they build a new town which they name Peace.
1969, a time of the Sharon Tate murders, it is also a time when flower children and hippies are looking to get high on all kinds of drugs. Aaron Yarn is an ex-college student, he has studied science and chemistry but has become part of the hippie set. Aaron uses this opportunity to experiment, by supplying his drugs to hippies. He becomes known as The Chemist. In his studies Aaron finds a certain book entitled Escape to Peace; this sets him on a path to find the town.
1974 A brutal and satanic murder happens in a small town library. The town is Witchville, Massachusetts and because its close vicinity to the town of Salem, it’s feared that some kind of curse from history’s witch trials has returned from the past to inflict havoc. The police team assigned to the case are perplexed and make little progress solving the case. Criticized by the press and upper ranks for their lack of progress, the case and therefore any blame, is deviously reassigned to a young detective, Jimmy Gardener. More than 2,700 Miles away in a San Francisco police precinct another detective, Spencer Corwin, is being coerced by his boss, a female CDI, to accept the position as sheriff of a small town called Peace, a town that only she and Corwin’s wife seems to have heard of.
All three of these seemingly unrelated dates come together to generate a surprisingly dramatic climax.
