The City of Goldstone
June 26, AD 29,794 (Stardate 27471483.41) marked the year that the Starship Earth Discovery located an underground bunker that provided hope that the starship’s crew might have found a permanent home. It had been two years since the population of the planet experienced what they had most feared, the nuclear destruction of the planet by the very governments that were brought into power to protect their people.

As the four members of the ground crew took their first steps into the darkness of the bunker, a dim glow began to appear around them. The glow began to move back into the depths of the bunker as if someone was walking up ahead and turning on the lights. The crew stopped after only walking twenty or so feet into the entrance. They then turned off their helmet lights. The glow was quite dim, but they had enough light to see each other. The light seemed to originate from the walls and ceiling.
As they watched, they could see deeper and deeper into the bunker; the place seemed immense and did not appear to have any end. Robert told his crew to stand where they were. After a moment or two, he moved a few feet to his left so he could get close to the entrance wall to examine the source of the light. When he touched the wall, it seemed as if there was moss or something that produced its own light. When he walked back to where his crew stood, Henry said, “I studied similar bioluminescent plants in college, although, nothing like this that can sense human presence. Most plants that luminesce are some type of fungi and the glowing is due to a pigment that reacts with a specific enzyme and oxygen. I cannot believe that the little oxygen we are expelling from our flight suits would be enough to cause this effect. Hell, there must be thousands of square feet of wall and ceiling surfaces that are glowing. I have no explanation.” Sandra commented that if the walls were covered with bioluminescent plants, the reason they were giving off light could be due to the laser cutting operation that the drone had conducted. She explained that the laser was cooled with pure oxygen and a large amount of the oxygen may have entered the bunker. However, that did not explain why the plants began to glow when the crew first entered.
