Robert Brickford and his family are blind-sided by a delegation from the Vatican, reporting that Brickford has been elected to the papacy; that a deadlocked College of Cardinals has been inspired by miraculous events to make him the supreme pontiff. Brickford is a married, Protestant American and inclined to dismiss the invitation to an interview by the conclave. His Catholic wife persuades him to accept and against opposition with the college, he is offered the appointment.

Unable to completely discount the possibility of divine intervention, Brickford becomes Pope Liberius II. His election threatens a schism within the faith and inspires enemies outside the church, including jihadists who see Liberius as the embodiment of Christianity. Ultimately, Robert Brickford must choose between is love for his family and his duty as the Vicar of Christ.
