The British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes, a fictional private detective. He refers to himself as a "consulting detective" in the stories. Holmes is famous for his keen observations, his forensic science, and logical reasoning that borders on the unbelievable. He uses these means for investigating cases for a wide circle of clients, including Scotland Yard.

The stories first appeared in print in 1887 with A Study in Scarlet. Holmes' popularity became widespread with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, starting with "A Scandal in Bohemia" in 1891. More stories appeared until 1927, eventually totalling four novels and 56 short stories. These are all set in the Victorian or Edwardian eras (1880 - 1914). Most of these are narrated by Holmes's friend, Dr. Watson, who often accompanies Holmes during his investigations and with whom he often shares his residence at 221B Baker Street, London.
