The British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes, a fictional private detective. He refers to himself as a "consulting detective" in the stories. Holmes is famous for his keen observations, his forensic science, and logical reasoning that borders on the unbelievable. The stories first appeared in print in 1887 with A Study in Scarlet. More stories appeared until 1927, eventually totalling four novels and 56 short stories. These are all set in the Victorian or Edwardian eras (1880 - 1914).
