It's a normal spring morning when Peter Walker wakes from a haunting dream, into the borderland between waking and sleep, to discover that his dreams of the long distant past are more than just dreams: they're memories.

Memories of his previous life, a life ended prematurely, like those of all his people, by his teacher. A monster.

Gradually, he remembers more of his past life, begins to learn again the magic talent which preserved his soul even when his body was destroyed.

At the same time, his mortal enemy begins his life anew, in the body of a young Scot called John Barnes. Ignorant of his own past, John is a petty tyrant, viciously cruel to his younger sister Sally; but otherwise harmless; until he, too, begins to remember his past, and remember his own awful magical talents.

As John begins to use his still-small abilities to dominate those around him, Peter is also re-learning all that he has lost, discovering a magical talent called 'Rememberancing' which allows him to re-live his past: a life spent as a student in an Academy on what would become Sardinia. A place which would later give rise to the legend of Atlantis. John has also began to Rememberance, to relive all the sadistic episodes from his awful past; and, worse, he has begun to use his growing talent to torment his sister in a cruel echo of his former life.

As each matures, their powers and influence grow, until they come together to fight for control of an empire, and through it, the world.
