This novel, the first by one of South Africa's foremost literary figures, is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. Set in the diamond diggings, The Dark River introduces miscegenation, a theme that recurs in much of her later work. The racist tones of her work have detrimentally affected her status, but nevertheless this novel provides a valuable insight into the life and times of South Africa at the beginning of the 20th century and remains an interesting read today. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
