Nathaniel Hawthorne was a famous American writer born in 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts. His first novel Fanshawe was published anonymously in 1828. Some short stories were published in 1837 as Twice-Told Tales. Hawthorne's works belong to the cultural movement called romanticism. His novels and short stories considered to be cautionary tales suggesting that guilt, sin, and evil are the most inherent natural qualities of humanity. Many of his works are inspired by Puritan New England combining historical romance loaded with symbolism and deep psychological themes. The Devil Manuscript by Hawthorne is a one of short stories describing a young ambitious and gifted poet, a friend of author. This youthful writer had a conversation with his friend about what kind of tales he writes and in what sphere of literary he finds himself. It was clear that young writer truly lost himself in the area of evil stories and devilish subjects. He didn't want to visit friends and invite them, only loneliness and abandonment. There was an impression of evil's possession of poet soul and his written records. Will the author be able to rescue the writer's mind?
