"Then, when the Troll line was beginning to waver, over the northern horizon there appeared a black spot. Saerin, standing on the high ground watching the dreadful battle was the first to see it. At first he thought it was a flock of birds but he realised that it was moving too fast. The spot became larger and far off, he could hear the sound of many powerful wings beating the air.
Saerin realised what was coming towards him. He swallowed hard and he felt his stomach knot. At the same time, a great roar came from the Trolls.
"The Dragons! The Dragons! The Dragons are coming!"

Saerin is a young slave, trapped in the seemingly impregnable Rel-Moren slave camp, run by the fearsome trolls in the shadow of the Dragon Mountains. No one has ever escaped.

He and his friend Lentor dream of freeing the Rel-Moren and their shrine to the supreme deity Tashnu will be rebuilt and the Fires rekindled. Through luck, bravery and gruesome exploits, Sarein and his companions manage to break out of the camp.

Yet since Saerin first met Lentor as a small, scared orphan, Lentor has maintained there was something different about Saerin, something special behind those grey, sad eyes. Yet both of them could not foresee what this gift would hold for them or for the numerous peoples and races of the land of Retellea.

Before long, Saerin’s destiny is intertwined with the once great Empire as well as the centaurs, elves, gnomes, and the mighty dragons from over the sea.

Fearsome battles, political strife, romance, treachery, great friendships struck and tragic loss suffered.

It’s all in the balance.

‘This is an adult fantasy of some power’
Chris Gilmore, Interzone Magazine

‘The author created a wonderfully bleak atmosphere that was very powerful and exciting’
