The Futility of Trying is an assortment of poems that revolve around a central character. By the time one reaches around the twentieth poem, one can identify him as a 20-something guy with insecurities, grandiose delusions about love, identity crises and confusion; (the things that generally come with being 20 something) when read between the lines. The poet has infused his love for nature and the difficulty he has in acceptance of the reality of the external world, in some poems. In a few, he speaks to people that have been part of his life or still are. The protagonist attempts to find love, but does he ever? The last few poems may leave the reader wondering whether he did find love or if they were just misguided musings of a lonely soul. There are only a few short stories; they show how much the writer misses his roots, his cherished childhood and his general exasperation with society. At the end of it all, the reader is still left deliberating if he found his identity, or if he was just unable to realize it, and he knew who he was all along.
