Ellena returns home one day to find a cat sitting on her doorstep- a cat that looks very much like her childhood pet. Struggling with depression, Ben pulls Ellena out of herself pitying cycle by deciding one day he can talk.
Ellena then becomes known as the girl whose cat walks her to her workplace, the local college. Catastrophe after catastrophe begin to start at work- usually caused by Ben that leads to something better. When things start to perk up, Ellena discovers a dark secret of the college and goes to the police. Realising the corruption of the college has spread to the police, the duo decide to take things into their own hands- or paws.
But when Emily, Ellena’s friend goes missing, it soon becomes clear they can’t do it alone. Detective Calloway forces his way into Ellena’s life, determined to expose the corruption within his own workplace. Faced with midnight attacks and threats, Ben and his human sneak into the Principal’s office to get files to prove the college’s guilt of money laundering, and to discover Emily’s whereabouts.
Taken to a safe house by Calloway’s colleagues, Ellena escapes with Ben and hunts down the location of Emily. Finding a farmhouse belonging to the Principal, Ellena is discovered and knocked out. She awakes to find Emily next to her and Ben chewing through her bonds. Seeing her captors intending to burn the place down with her and Emily still in it, Ellena breaks her bonds and struggles with the main assailant. When the police arrive, Ellena discovers then she has been shot.
Ellena awakes in a hospital, Ben nowhere in sight. No one has seen him, and all believes he is lost. Ellena falls into a depression and becomes part of a media craze, whilst Calloway comes and goes, concerned for her health. Ellena then tries to piece her life together and becomes plagued by dreams of her Granddad telling her she isn’t looking in the right places.
She finally goes to her Granddad’s graveside and finds Ben waiting for her. She goes to Australia to rehabilitate whilst Emily and her cat, Juniper move in to look after Ben. After returning, Calloway comes to her house and asks her on a date. Ben and Juniper have kittens.
